Jutting dramatically out into the Pacific Ocean 60 miles southeast of Cordova, the nearest town. Kayak Island is most easily accessed by helicopter as airplane flights require a two mile hike along the coastline. This uninhabited island is home to a National Historic Landmark, the two-story Cape St. Elias lighthouse. Built in 1916, this active lighthouse stands tall with a research center and habitable boathouse below it. We recommend a multi-night stay at the boathouse, which accommodates up to 10 paying visitors. It is stocked with wood, water, and the all of the basic necessities. Please contact http://kayakisland.org/ for overnight reservations.
